The New York Times sued Brave, alleging that the privacy-browser maker used an undisclosed crawler to scrape copyrighted news content, bypass paywalls, and sell the data to AI companies including Anthropic, Perplexity, Mistral, xAI and Cohere. The suit, filed in Manhattan federal court, seeks an injunction and damages; the New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune and other outlets filed similar suits the same day. The complaint claims Brave built an index of more than 30 billion webpages and blocked publisher ads, and Brave had not responded publicly when the report was published.
